There's not a ton of good research on this, but I always do a course of prophylactic valacyclovir when I see a provider.
Obviously it's used after you're infected to reduce flare ups, but there was a study done showing good results in preventing HSV-1 transmission among wrestlers, who can be prone to transmitting given the skin to skin contact in a communal setting. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16495626/)
Also washing with Hibiclens before (it shows some residual activity against bacteria and viruses for some time after being used) and after. Not foolproof but unless you just want to abstain all together, sometimes all you can do is try and reduce the risk as best you can.
